Ever wonder where all those amazing names you see around have come from? Well here are the answers. Find out some common ways that people use to find names for their dragons, and maybe even some uncommon ones.
Ways to find Names Name Sites- Check out baby names sites! For example: http://babynames.com/ Just read through the lists until you find one that matches your dragon's personality or image if you haven't created it yet. Just Combining Letters-Back when the DCL was a Neo-related site, a common way to find names was to get a letter sound you liked and just try different combinations of letters and sounds till you found one you liked that wasn't taken. Now you have a lot more choices at hand. Many great names were created just on the creator's imagination. Different
Languages- Take a word or color that describes your dragon and then
translate it into another language. Maybe combine two words, or several
languages. Tack on endings. It can make some really nice names. Any language
will work. Original Names- A good idea when creating names is to make sure that it's not used already. While you can use a common name that someone else has used, many people tend to get mad when a name is used. And using an uncommon name can be considered art theft. And of course it can get confusing around the DCL. Checking through the DCL list of accounts, as well as searching on Deviantart.com can be a good way to avoid irritated people.
-------- And some examples... All in all, naming is something that's different for every person. Just keep trying until you find something that fits. Here's a few examples of how DCL members found their dragon's names. "I just know I wanted to name
her after snow....something. And I wanted it to start with an A. I've always
thought of Aire as a Christmas word because one of the Mannheim Steamroller CDs
(OMGLOVE) is "Christmas in the Aire". I liked the spelling - and associated it
with Christmas. So, Aire, as a Christmas Eve dragon should have Aire as a
name!! I added "Niel" onto the end taken from the Spanish word for snow (which
is so lovely) nieve. So she could have been all kinds of crazy combinations:
Aieve, Nievaire, Ainieve... but I decided to cut down nieve a bit and just take
the "nie" (pronounced nee-ay). Then I swapped an A for the E and added an L on
the end to make it flow... Airaniel! "Snowy winter air" *obsessed with naming,
can you tell?*"
"Monte was an homage to the Count of Monte Cristo. Hence why his petpet/familiar’s
name is Count. Ironically, I found out later that his name means both “from the
mountain” and “rich”, of which Monte is both." "Don’s name is Spanish, and means
Lord Wicked Sprite. When first born his name was just Duende, Sprite, an homage
to his mother, while Van was Duisternis, Darkness, an homage to his father.
Their names were later embellished by their adoptive family. Van’s name
is Dutch and means From Grumbling Darkness. Together he and Don are Lord Wicked
Sprite from Grumbling Darkness." "Boko’s full name
is Boko Wethrin Vie Foma IV. He named himself. He is a mix of French and Kurt
Vannegut’s language in Cat’s Cradle. His name means Boko, Deceiver Who Lives by
the Lies Which We Tell Ourselves to Make us Happy." "Irdische
resulted from my having designed a character and decided that he was going to be
an earth mage. So I brought out my old German-English dictionary from high
school and went looking for German words that related to earth. Irdische means
earthly nature in German. I thought it sounded nice, and it seemed to fit, even
though Ird isn't from anything like a germanic background." "I saw a random
Neopet named Andhure that really struck me as pleasant. One day, going to ogle
the idle pet, I incorrectly typed the name and got Anduhre. When I saw it
available, I spazzed and immediately made a pet with the name. I have since been
glad I didn't wait for Andhure as I like Anduhre better." "For
Adwen's name, I researched baby names that meant "White", because she's albino.
I settled on Adwen (which is the Welsh name for "White, Blessed") because it
fits her character history as well; where her birth fulfilled a prophecy for her
people, the Prysma'era - hence 'blessed'. Opal is the name Orich called her when
he met her because she wears only opal-jewelry. (I created her in October so it
could be her birthstone as well!) : 3" "I was wearing a T-shirt that said 'America' on it and
I looked in a mirror one day and at the end of the word I saw 'Acir'. And I
changed the spelling to Aisir because everyone was saying it wrong!"
"I think it means 'gold' in greek, which is where she landed when
she fell from the sky into earth. She landed in a active volcano, which kinda
scorched her a bit and she ran into the water in a lot of pain to cool herself
down. When she emerged, the local (and at the time), larger dragons laughed and
yelled 'Ophira' because she emerged from the water in a encasing of gold energy
which was helping to protect and heal her body from any more damage than it had
already suffered. Of course thousands of years later she completely obliterated
the species of dragon native to that area of Greece for all those years of
torment for not being as brightly coloured and royal looking as they were." |
